With the pace of change within the technology sector continuing to accelerate, choosing a research firm that can play multiple roles well is becoming essential to redefining the role of client side research within the technology industry.

Fewer business unit executives and client side researchers have the luxury of bringing a broad list of suppliers up to speed on the nuances of their business, only to find that these suppliers are strong in certain areas, and not up to the task in others.

Most large firms for instance can capably build large-scale, global tracking programs that provide the ability for clients to cobble together pieces of information these studies collect to meet some or most of their needs. What happens in many cases however is that the questions most relevant to effectively managing a client’s business are not covered in the study, or at least not in the detail necessary to provide management with the concrete direction they need to make confident, effective business decisions based in part on the data from these types of studies. In many of these instances additional custom research is called for that adds to budget and timing challenges already permeating the technology industry. Some large firms that focus on building and running tracking studies are not built to quickly and cost effectively handle these types of one-off studies. In ‘worst case’ scenarios, business unit executives and others simply stop looking to these types of studies as resources from which to develop informed business decisions at all.

In other cases, business unit executives and client side researchers retain ‘specialty’ firms that are very small, but ‘experts’ in certain methodologies, business issues or markets.
